Eligibility

The Undergraduate Legal Aid Office is a free service available to currently-enrolled full-time University of Maryland undergraduates. Please bring your University ID when you visit the office so we can verify your status. Students without a University ID cannot be helped.

What to Expect

Upon entering the Undergraduate Legal Aid Office, students are greeted by a student intern. The intern will compile an intake report, which details the facts of the case and any questions for the staff attorney.

Next, the intern will meet with the attorney to brief him on the facts of the case. They will then bring the student into the meeting with the attorney. Together, the student, intern and attorney will discuss the situation, and the attorney will provide advice, including attorney referrals if applicable.

The office can only assist clients who do not have a conflict with other undergraduate students. Because the office serves all undergraduates, such a situation would create a conflict of interest. If you believe a conflict of interest may be an issue, consult with the office: If we can't provide legal advice, we may be able to refer you to another service. Mediation services may also be provided.
